چکیده

Coated powder particles composed of a ceramic core and a metallic coating are being considered for plasma spray applications. The goal of using these powders is to produce particulate-reinforced metal-matrix composite coatings. In this work, the feasibility of plasma spray processing in producing these composite coatings is evaluated. A numerical model is presented to analyze the in-flight thermal behavior and physical state of moderate-size particles (10–30 mm radius) in arc-jet DC plasma under low loading conditions. The pairs of materials for the base and coating that are considered in this work are WC-Co, SiC-Ni, and SiC-Al. The plasma was taken to be atmospheric argon plasma. The study suggests that plasma processing is capable of melting the coating without excessive evaporation while retaining the base in the solid state over a range of particle sizes and base/coating proportions. Hence plasma processing appears suitable to develop particulate-reinforced metal-matrix composite coatings. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1403742#

Effect of TiO2 addition on the microstructure and nanomechanical properties of Al2O3 Suspension Plasma Sprayed coatings

Alumina-titania coatings are widely used in industry for wear, abrasion or corrosion protection components. Such layers are commonly deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) using powder as feedstock. In this study, both Al2O3 and Al2O3-13 wt% TiO2 coatings were deposited on austenitic stainless steel coupons by suspension plasma spraying (SPS). Two commercial suspensions of nanosized Al2...

Plasma spraying and characterization of chromium carbide – nickel chromium coatings

Chromium carbide – nickel chromium powder Cr3C2-25wt.NiCr was plasma sprayed by a water-stabilized system WSP®. A series of experiments with variable feeding distance was carried out. Basic characterization of coatings was done by XRD, SEM and light microscopy plus image analysis. Microhardness was measured on polished cross sections. The main focus of investigation was on resistances against w...

Warm spraying-a novel coating process based on high-velocity impact of solid particles.

In recent years, coating processes based on the impact of high-velocity solid particles such as cold spraying and aerosol deposition have been developed and attracting much industrial attention. A novel coating process called 'warm spraying' has been developed, in which coatings are formed by the high-velocity impact of solid powder particles heated to appropriate temperatures below the melting...

Mullite and Mullite/ZrO2-7wt.%Y2O3 Powders for Thermal Spraying of Environmental Barrier Coatings

Mullite and mullite/ZrO2-7wt.%Y2O3 coatings could be thought among the main protective layers for environment barrier coatings (EBCs) to protect Si-based substrates in future gas turbine engines. Considering that feedstock of the compound powder is not commercially available, two powder processing routes Spray Drying (SD) and Flame Spheroidization (FS) were implemented for both types of powders...
